Railway Minister Pawan Kumar Bansal- Biography

Pawan Kumar Bansal was born on 16 July,1948 in Sunam, Punjab. He completed his schooling from Yadavindra public school, Patiala and graduation in B.Sc. from Government College, Chandigarh. He also holds a degree of LLB from the Department of Law, Panjab University. He is an advocate by profession and a member of the Indian National Congress political party. Pawan Kumar Bansal started his political career in 1976 as general secretary of the Chandigarh Territorial Youth Congress. He became 39th railway minister of India on 28 October, 2012 and presently is the member of 15th Lok Sabha of India.

Railway Minister Pawan Kumar Bansal made his efforts for the growth of all sections of the society. He struggled to increase employment opportunities in IT sector, establishing new community centers, development of beautiful parks in all sectors and scaling up quality education in schools of Chandigarh. Some of his achievements are :

•  General Secretary of Punjab Pradesh youth Congress during the time period 1978-82
•  Member of Rajya Sabha in 1984-90
•  Elected to the tenth Lok Sabha of India for the year 1991
•  Chairman of Joint Parliamentary Committee on 83rd Constitution bill in 1993
•  Re-elected to 13th Lok Sabha of India in 1999 
•  Secretary of all India Congress Committee   
•  Re-elected to 14th Lok Sabha of India in the year 2004   
•  Minister of state for finance during the time period 2006-09  
•  Minister of state for Parliament affairs during 2008-09              
•  Re-elected to 15th Lok Sabha of India in 2009     
•  Union Cabinet Railway Minister of India during 2012-13   


Pawan Kumar Bansal became the first member of Congress party to take ministry after 1996. He served the railway department by starting many new trains, improving infrastructure of stations, electrification of many routes, setting up railway skill development centers, starting e-ticketing and centralized catering services.
